Bannockburn Riesling 2024
Oct 25, 2024
The first release of the 50th Anniversary vintage.
The Geelong region is not widely known for its Riesling production, and while there is no shortage of outstanding examples from other parts of Australia, our Bannockburn Riesling has been quietly establishing itself as a notable part of our portfolio. The old vines, planted by Stuart in 1976 at the Olive Tree Hill vineyard, comprise about two-thirds of the blend, while an additional parcel was planted in 2015 at the Winery Block vineyard.
Old vines in unique soils provide a strong foundation for quality in any variety. One of the remarkable characteristics of Riesling grapes is their ability to express the terroir, allowing the specifics of the site and region to shine through more clearly than in other varieties. The limestone base plays a significant role in our expression, imparting a tension and grip that feels somewhat effortless. Matt's careful and considered approach in the winery involves wild fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, preserving freshness and aromatic purity. The wine rests on its fermentation lees for three months before being bottled early and released in the spring following the harvest.
The typical qualities we associate with our Riesling include zesty citrus notes, floral aromas, lemongrass, salinity, and musk. Despite the light touch during vinification, the wine is generally textural and dense. The inherent power of the soils and the old vines gives it a distinctive voice.
If you haven't tried Bannockburn Riesling yet, now is a great time to do so. We look forward to continuing our pursuit of excellence with this variety from our unique corner of the world.
