2024 Vintage Report
Oct 10, 2024
As we have just released our first wines from the 2024 vintage it seems a good time to reflect on the vintage that was...
There is a lot of excitement around the new wines, as well as the wines still maturing in the cellar. We have good volumes across our major grape varieties and we look forward to being able to release our full range over the coming year.
2024 began with a dry winter. The greater sunlight of the 2022/2023 summer stimulated a return to normal fruitfulness (bunch count numbers and bunch composition) for the first time since 2019. Despite a wet spring we had good flowering too and so the winery began to prepare for a busy vintage.
Rainfall ended January 18 but the warm weather continued; we ended up with what we would consider an ‘average’ Growing Degree Day count of 1425. Picking started for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir late February, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet/Merlot all picked by the end of March.
Quantity was a welcome change from recent years and quality is very good: fresh acidity, concentration, colour, tannin and steady fermentations have us looking forward to bottling what are our 50 year celebration wines.
