Admittedly I have a preference for this style of shiraz but this 2023 is a ripper release. It’s peppery. It shows its whole bunch influences in its twiggy herb and nut-like inflections, and in its stringy tannin, and perhaps in its smoky notes too. But the fruit still feels pure and red/black cherried, and those aforementioned black pepper notes ping both energetically, and deliciously, throughout. This year’s Bannockburn Shiraz has a bit of extra spark. It has excellent length, polish, fruit, mouthfeel and all those things. But it exudes that extra something, that star quality. Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1771/8143/files/shiraz-nobackground_c622a3f8-f1be-465f-8c37-da27afeb3017.png?v=1728004465
winery-block-chardonnay-2024
Winery Block Chardonnay 2024

Winery Block was planted in 1981 alongside the construction of the winery and has played a formative role in shaping our Chardonnay identity. The premier release of this wine, from vines planted in 1981 to clone P58. Aromas of lemon confit, struck matches, grilled citrus, grapefruit, salted nuts, sea spray and white flowers. The palate is textural, with a fine line of acidity and layers of complex, densely packed fruit around a mineral core. Great tension and purity, with a fine backbone for aging. Excellent. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented and matured in French hogsheads and puncheons (40% new); 100% mlf. A very bright green gold. With it aromas of white nectarine, sea spray, gently grilled cashew and just a hint of fresh vanillin, this is engaging from the moment you stick your nose in the glass. Like the '23, this is simultaneously mouth-filling, textured and with enough backbone to ensure that this will continue to evolve over the next six to eight years at least. Philip Rich, winecompanion.com.au.

95 points. This is stellar. It’s a wine of both power and length and with a bit of extra character as well. Apples, peaches, slips of pear skin and nuts, perhaps some stonefruit pips as well, or certainly something that seems both fruity and woody at once. It’s not reticent or restrained but nor is it exaggerated; it’s alive with flavour, fit and firing you could say, ripped with muscle and energy. Touch and go for 96. In any case it’s superb. The 2024 Olive Tree Hill Pinot Noir is made from the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the estate: own-rooted MV6 clone planted in 1976. This is fine and lacy in context with the other Bannockburn Pinots from the 2024 release, and it shows tapenade, freshly grated nutmeg, clove, rose petals, cocoa and new leather. It's so pretty! There remains a meaty character woven through the back of the wine, but it is a subtle element that emphasizes some of the prettier aspects of the experience. This is lovely. It is still brambly and exotic but restrained and focused, too. This is very good. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Erin Larkin, robertparker.com.

95 points. There’s polish to this wine, and a meatiness, and savoury inputs aplenty, and a long confident push through the finish. It’s Bannockburn pinot noir to a tee. Red cherry, tonic water, rhubarb, undergrowth and woodsmoke characters run into rust, steel, earth and cedar. There’s a umami aspect to this wine; indeed it runs right through it. Courtesy of this wine’s balance – and long, even flow through the finish – you could easily drink this now. But it will be a more complex delight with some years under its belt.
